GR\nCOM\nFRB\nFROM\n: Amembassy RIO DE JANE:mO\nIN T\nLAe\nTA R\nSUBJECT: Negative Report on UFO (Unidentified Flying Object)\nReportedly Sighted Near Salvador, Bahia on November 8, 1964.\nREF\n: Embtel 94 to Amconsul Salvador (to SecState 1054) of\nNovember 14, 1963.\n7\n---=---+-~-~~ r\nInformation copies of the above Embtel were sent to the\nDepartment with the request that they be passed to Defense (for\nthe Air Force) and NASA.\nMr. Harold Midkiff, the Consul in Salvador, replied by\ntelegram No. 157 of November 14 to the above cited Embtel; as\nfollows:\n\"Story of strange object descending in region of Conde Bahia\napparently fabricated in Rio no such objects seen by\nanyone in the area according to newspaper reporters and\nothers who rushed there before investigation reports\nwere received Secretary Public Security speculated object\nmight be weather balloon but no such sighting verified.\"\nIn addition, he forwarded by pouch also on November 14\ntwo newspaper clippings from Salvadoran journalswhich substan­\ntiate the above message, respectively Diario de Noticias of\nNovember 9, and the Jornal da Bahia of November 11.\nThe first\nof these states that the Ministry of Aeronautics categorically\ndenies that there was any 11strange object\" in Conde.\nThe other\nis entitled \"The Airship that wasn't there\".\nAccording to the Jornal da Bahia reporter, the only news­\nworthy aspect of the episode is that it produced an astounding\nby-product:\nhe sent a telegram to his paper from the federal\ntelegraphic office in Conde - by an old morse code transmitter ­\n,dS.\n,.\n.. :::\n'\nI\nI '\nL\n••a•~\"' .------~.;.:.....c-\"\n_J\n•.JJ ~ UNCLASSIFIED\n\"\"FOR DITT USE ONLY\nFORM\n~\nDS-323\ncit?n'\n□ Out\n4 • 82\n: SA:ACSimonpietr1/vmd 11-20-63\nCluranccs: AA:RDKalb in substance\nDECLASSIFIED NND 939551"
